Film Industry: Blinded By The Light case study

1) What was the budget for Blinded By The Light and which companies contributed to the production budget?

The budget for the film was 15 million and was raised by companies such as the BFI film fund and national lotteries helped to support the films budget. Levantine films and ingenious media were the main companies that contributed to the production budget.

Some films include Beckham house, Viceroys house, It's a wonderful afterlife, Angus thongs and perfect snogging, Mistress of spices, Bride and prejudice and Bend it like Beckham.

New line Cinema was founded in 1967 and for over 50 years continued to build on innovation and creativity, it is very successful in producing hit films that resonate with both mainstream and niche audiences around the world. It produced the lord of the rings trilogy which generated almost 3 billion which was followed by another 3 billion in consumer products. It is also known as one of the main pioneers in the horror genre. It is also credited with revitalising the genre of the R-rated comedy for example movies like "we're the millers" or "dumb and dumber".


4) Read this Variety interview with director Gurinder Chadha explaining how the project came about - including budget details. How did she manage to get the film made? 

Gurinder Chadha stated that she had to stop seeing Bruce as a rockstar but more as someone who wrote the songs for the movie, she was originally worried about adding Bruce's music to the film however she was encouraged by Bruce himself to begin writing the screenplay and something would be figured out. She also stated that money was not going to be a problem because Bruce really wanted the movie to happen however without Bruce's cooperation and his trust the film never would have been successful or even have been made in the first place.

Guridner Chadha knows firsthand what it feels like to be an outsider which attracted her to the project because she felt like it would be relatable to others, moreover her fascination with Bruce Springsteins music also created a link between her experiences and the project.

The article suggests that without the inspiration and use of Bruce Springsteen's music the movie may have not been created and/or its effects on the audiences and message would have not been the same. Moreover, due to the fact that a worldwide audience liked Bruce's music this allowed for the film to have a large potential audience.

They claim that through the use of a studio ie eOne entertainment stories can be told to audiences around the world and the production and development of these stories can be managed and assisted through eOne.

1) What does the trailer suggest regarding genre and the potential audience pleasures of Blinded By The Light?

The potential audience would definitely be that of a younger age potentially teenagers as the film involves a lot of teenagers and a school of focus which is a sixth form. The genres suggested by the trailer could be comedy, drama and/or horror in the slightest.

2) What did film posters for Blinded By The Light feature and where did they appear?

The typically appeared in popular places such as London, Luton, New Jersey and Asbury Park. In the posters Javed can be seen with his 80s style headphones in the air which suggests that he may be happy or excited.


3) What TV shows and websites did interviews with writer, director and stars of Blinded By The Light? Why are interviews a good way to promote a new film release?

Shows such as BBC1 and on Hey U Guys interviewed the director/writer and this is a cost effective and easy way to advertise the film because throughout the interviews the trailer of the film was played therefore a large potentially new audience now knows of the film and may opt to watch it.

4) How does the Blinded By The Light Twitter account create and maintain interest in the film?

Through the use of short video model products ie gifs the twitter account was able to sustain a large audience and an audience that was engaged, this was made sure by the fact that questions were often asked to the audience meaning engagement of the audiences was a strong point. This creates more interest in the film because audiences become closer to the film and the twitter account.

5) How does the Blinded By The Light Facebook page use images and video content to promote the film?

Like twitter, the facebook page also uses images for example to engage the audience and to capture a younger audience, this is because the target audience for the film is younger teens as shown by the 12+ rating.

This post in particular through the use of the quote directly engages the audience and challenges them to be more.








In this post through the use of the bright and bold text the audience is directly engaged and through an enigma code the audience questions whether the film is actually a "roller coaster of emotion" therefore they become inclined to watch the film and see for themselves if the film is what it says it is.







In this post the enigma code is created and the audience questions why the characters appear to be running, this creates a sudden interest in the film for the audience making them more inclined to watch it to figure out what is happening.







7) Go to the Bend It Networks YouTube channel. How does Gurinder Chadha introduce the channel?  What other content is on the Bend It Networks YouTube channel?

Gurinder is immediately presented as loud and bubbly which entices the audiences as this makes her seem fun and friendly, then the next shot is a montage shot which reveals all the works and films she has worked on in her life suggested that Bend it Networks is the lead company behind all these films. Throughout the channel many works of Gurinder are shown such as trailers for various films and various interviews.

8) Look at the box office figures for Blinded By The Light from The Numbers website. How much did it make at the box office and why do you think it was largely unsuccessful?

Blinded by the light made over $18 million however this is a loss because the film originally spent $15 million meaning that they made a loss. This is because although 3 million was generated most of this money was spent on marketing and advertising the film.
